Even today, in many parts of India, as well as the world, there continues to be discrimination towards the Girl Child - discrimination with regard to basic rights, opportunities and safeguards.
The World celebrates the International Day of the Girl Child, today, on 11th October, and India celebrates the National Girl Child Day, on 24th January. Several conferences and discussions happen at national and global levels, bringing together various organisations, to continue to raise much needed awareness and action, towards these specific needs of the Girl Child.
It is ironic, though, as to how much converts into action, post these macro level discussions!
Even more ironic, is the fact, that most discrimination, happens within 'educated' households, within families, behind closed doors! (at the micro level)
How can we expect sustained global change in this matter, when there is little or no change, at the basic unit level - the FAMILY!
...Do we raise our children equally?
...Can we get away from the archaic traditional roles of women and men, in our homes, and teach our children, by example, the true meaning of equality, equal responsibility, and freedom to be their authentic selves and express freely?
...Do we adults, treat each other with respect, so as to set a fine example for our children?
...Do we instill in our children, a value system, that encourages tolerance and respect, towards everyone, irrespective of differences like gender?
More importantly, do we treat our children with respect; respect their freedom to explore their childhood, rather, than, forcing them into robotism and rigidity, at the hands of an education system that is facilitating more robotic-competitive-violent spirit, rather than a healthy reflective-collaborative-peaceful one!
It all begins at home, and gets reinforced at home!
If the Girl Child, is abused and deprived, across the world, we are ALL EQUALLY RESPONSIBLE for this, at the micro level of our own family, our community, our neighbourhood, our society! We may be ignorantly aiding and growing this negative world consciousness!
The positive in this is, if we are all responsible for it, we can also bring about the much needed change, by simply ensuring the little changes, in our little world. If we can achieve this, we will automatically contribute to a sustained global change.

I, would love a world, free from gender bias! I am positively rooting for this!
I set a conscious intention for this, daily! Why? Because, I feel passionately about it, not just the discrimination towards women, but, also, towards men!
At my micro level, I will do whatever I can to ensure that my interactions reflect respect, kindness, tolerance, and acceptance, and I will encourage the same in my Sam.
Let us be the change, we want to see in the world!
It begins at HOME!......It begins with US!......It begins with ME!
